Another aspect I like to do is see how the card I am looking compares to other cards in same slabs with the same grades then look how much space appears around the cards in the holder. They are all over the place but you can find how unaltered cards fit nearly perfectly and altered ones seem to have a small spaces on the horizontal or vertical edges. Of course some cards are dropped and damaged, and if that is the cause of the shrinkage generally OK with it.
